If you need to know anything about me, you should know I’m a hardcore kid through and through and always will be. So, when a hardcore show comes to the Paradise Rock Club, an overall wonderful venue but a venue that is a nightmare to photograph during hardcore shows (no barricade and standing poles in the audience space), I will definitely brave these hurtles for a show. Especially for Jesus Piece.

Joined by Sanguisugabogg, Peeling Flesh and Gag, Jesus Piece ended their month long North American tour in Boston, Ma.

Jesus Piece -

Jesus Piece is an American metalcore/ hardcore punk band from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania that was formed in 2015. The band consists of Aaron Heard (vocals), David Updike (guitar), John DiStefano (guitar), AAlexander Cejas (bass), and Luis Aponte (drums).Since formation they have released three EPs and two Studio Albums, the most recent release being …So Unknown in 2023. They signed to Southern Lord Records in 2018. In March of 2020 they were scheduled to tour with Code Orange and Show Me The Body, but the tour was postponed indefinitely due to the Covid-19 Pandemic.

According to vocalist Aaron Heard, the band was initially supposed to be a death metal band, but it evolved into the metalcore/hardcore punk/sludge metal fusion that we get today. Their influences for their debut album was “anything from brutal and old school death metal to straight-up punk and hardcore.” They’re part of a new metalcore movement that experiments with many “succinct, clobbering riffs” (Pitchfork). Their sound also seems to take influences from industrial music as well as ’90’s metalcore.

Through their music the group has been known to push “further toward utter mayhem and culminating in a show that stands tall among their genre peers and live music writ large.”

Jesus Piece’s stage presence and sheer talent is still solidified high in my list of best live acts. Their sound is a very brutal sty

le of hardcore, yet their sound doesn’t get lost in the continues beatdowns and slams and stays recognizable and enjoyable the whole time. The energy throughout their set and the venue remained ecstatic the whole time, securing the sense of community that always comes with hardcore shows.

MY FAVORITE SONG: “An Offering to the Night” off of …So Unknown (2023)

Sanguisugabogg -

Coming from Columbus, Ohio, Sanguisugabogg is a death metal band that was formed in 2019. Although it is a reference to the founder’s last name (Cameron Bogg), the name comes from a combination of the word “sanguisuga” meaning “leech” in Latin and “bog” which is British slang for “toilet.” The band currently consists of members Devin Swank (vocals), Cody Davidson (drums), Cedrik Davis (guitar and bass), and Drew Arnold (guitar and bass). Since their creation they have released one demo, one live album and two studio albums, their most recent release being Homicidal Ecstasy in 2023.

It’s usually pretty hard to follow up after Jesus Piece and the energy that they’ve left in the hard, but Sanguisugabogg did a pretty damn good job. Their sound is filled with heavy hitting riffs and growling vocals, empowering and energizing the entire crowd to finish out the night on a high.

MY FAVORITE SONG: “Dead as Shit” off of Tortured Whole (2021)
