Show Review: Caamp at Red Rocks 07.19.23
The annual return of Caamp to Red Rocks has become one of the most anticipated live music events in Colorado. Tickets sell quickly as the Ohio group returns to spread their folk charm every year. This year the group hit the amphitheater’s world renowned stage for 2 back to back sold out nights. HVNLY arrived to night one of the groups double header as the group was joined by Carsie Blanton. Blanton started the breezy summer evening off with her charming personality and heartfelt protest songs to a welcoming and receptive crowd.
The venue had become packed quickly and fans quickly filled their seats, greeting friends and taking in the nights beautiful atmosphere as Carsie finished her short yet stunning opening set. The night was fully abuzz as everyone was in high spirits to catch their favorite band as they returned to the beautiful mountain stage.
The roar from the crowd as immense as Taylor Meir and Caamp hit the stage. Illuminated by vintage spotlights the band calmly walked toward their instruments and waved to the crowd. The band looked cool as cucumbers as they adorned their instruments and put out their cigarettes to kick the nights performance off with ‘Great Heights’. A stunning floral display behind the band created an atmosphere as if they were truly playing on the mountain side among the wildflowers.
As the band continued their set it was hard not to sense a homely feeling that radiated through the venue. The feeling projecting from the groups warm performance that cut through the summer night chill to inspire lovers to sway hand and hand and groups of friends to stomp, sing, and dance around the venues wide rows. Red Rocks may be home to countless EDM shows each summer, but the crisp guitar strumming and banjo plucking inspired so much movement from everyone in the crowd that it rivaled the dancing at those shows. It was nearly impossible to not constantly be driven to move and sing along to the beautiful tones radiating between the massive sandstone monoliths that surround the venue.
Between songs Taylor was appreciative and recognized the lovely crowd that evening, but few words needed to be spoken as you could tell that he and the band were truly invested in providing a standout night one performance.
From the first song to the nights encore (which included a cover of Tyler Childers ‘Feathered Indians’, ‘All The Debts I Owe’, and was capped off with ‘Mockingbird Song’) it truly felt as if this venue is a second home for Caamp. As if they are Colorado natives who are as just as comfortable and loving of this iconic venue as the 9000+ fans that were treated to the groups amazing music both nights.
Caamp continues on with their summer tour which will spend 2 nights at The Salt Shed in Chicago with support by Speaking Suns on September 14th and 15th.
